Ask the instructor, don’t assume

  • cabiojinia

Today we consider the third inference from the gym illustration I gave on Monday.

If I get very excited after watching several YouTube videos of professional bodybuilders and with such excitement I hit the gym, lifting 100kg and 200kg of dumbbells without listening to an instructor, you can be sure that I won’t be back there for some months.

Why? The soreness that will kick in the following days will be so much that the excitement will be gone in a minute. This was exactly what happened to my friend.

Who needs an instructor and why

*A beginner

An instructor is needed when you’re starting off with your physical exercises. Maybe you’ve spent hours watching people exercise online or you were encouraged by friends and family to do some physical exercises. Whatever may be the case, it’s important that you discuss with an instructor what your goals are and how much time you want to achieve them. Like I wrote a few days ago, the initial excitement often fades when the reality of the effort that’s needed sets in.

An instructor will help you develop a workable plan and guide you in training because he has the necessary experience, having worked with newbies like you. He will teach you what muscles to train first, how to train them, what weights to lift, and he’ll help you monitor your progress as well as motivate you when necessary. Also, you’ll be saved from unnecessary pains that come with doing things you shouldn’t do.

So, it is in any venture you want to involve yourself in – business, education, professional, politics etc. There’s always a need for a mentor, especially someone who has experience in that or similar field who can help you with valuable lessons. It’s not enough to have a great idea. Your idea needs to have a plan and needs execution too. So, an instructor is very important.

So, it’s very good that you’re excited about your new business venture, new prospects of career advancement and all whatnot but ask for counsel. Not from everyone, but from GOD and from trusted people with experience who can guide you.

*A professional

An instructor is also important for those who have been training for some time (and as professionals too) because having watched them grow, he’s able to offer more customised advice on things to work on. It’s just like a great footballer who still needs a coach to perform optimally. So, you still need a fitness coach irrespective of the success you may have attained as a professional bodybuilder.

The same goes for life. Whether you’ve attained some level of maturity as a Christian or you’ve attained some level of success as a professional in any field of endeavour, you always need a mentor, a guide, someone or some people you look up to in character, resilience, focus, purity, humility etc. These people will continue to refine and bring out the best in you.

In life you’ll keep learning and unlearning; that is what guarantees growth and improvement. So, listen to your instructor. For in the multitude of counsellors, says the Holy Bible, there is safety.

And I’d add, listen to your Creator.

For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

Isaiah 50:7
