The life-giving power of thoughts and words

Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.

Proverbs 18:21 MSG

Don’t ever underestimate the potency of those words that exit your mouth daily, whether you’re alone or in the company of others. I’m not talking about your words concerning others (which you should be careful about) but the things you say to and about yourself.

The words of your mouth are prophecies released upon your life. I know you want anointed men of God to make prophecies over your life, but please note that the prophecies will have little or no effect if you constantly counter them with the words you say over your life – you are your first prophet. (You will have to live with the consequences of everything you say – Proverbs 18:20 GNT)

The power in what you say is so much that God, through Solomon, warned us that death and life reside on that eight-muscle organ called the tongue; it looks tiny, but its daily product can define your entire life. Remember, whatsoever Adam called a thing, that automatically became the name of that thing.

Whatever you say about yourself today is a seed you are sowing that will germinate someday – you unconsciously grow to become your words.

But as powerful as your outer words can be, your inner words are even more. Your inner words are those words that no one hears except your mind. These are those words that even the closest friend or spouse may not perceive, no matter how hard they tried. Simply put, they are your thoughts. While your outer words speak into your ears and command you to become them, your thoughts speak to your heart and influence you to say and act on them.

Thoughts generate words because it is out of the abundance of what resides within that you speak without. You can’t change your words if you haven’t changed your thoughts – that would amount to inner conflict. Think of yourself as God’s image and likeness, and soon you’ll begin to confess and act like one. Think of yourself as anything less, and soon your life will align too. The Bible tells us to guard our heart because it is the source of life. So, your thoughts feed your heart, and that becomes your life.

Your words and thoughts align. You can’t make positive prophecies with your mouth while making negative confessions in your thoughts – they must be aligned to produce the effect you desire. If you can go through the inner cleansing of your thoughts at the hand of Jesus Christ, the rest will follow. When your thoughts constantly are purged by the ever-flowing springs of living waters, they will ultimately yield life.

Finally, I give you a challenge that I borrowed several years ago from Philippians 4:8. It’s a simple challenge, but one you must painstakingly do if you desire results. Here it is:

If you can find (and they are many), constantly meditate on and confess any Bible verse(s) or story that you consider positive, uplifting, virtuous, purifying and lovely for the next uninterrupted 66 days, your life will completely change.

Avoid reading, thinking and meditating on anything contrary to those scriptures. 

Don’t trust me; trust God. And He will bring it to pass.
