Dear God, work on my heart. May I never be insensitive to the cries and tears of the oppressed. May I not close my heart to their pleas and oppress the weak.
While reading Genesis 42:21, I couldn’t help but break down in tears before God, asking Him to help my heart not become hardened, cold and insensitive as were the hearts of these men.
The brethren of Joseph saw the anguish of his soul as he cried, pleading for mercy. But they were hell-bent on selling him off to the Midianites. They were unbothered that he might be killed. Their only preoccupation was to get rid of “this dreamer.” They didn’t want to kill him with their own hands, but if someone else did it, then no problems.
Sometimes, humans act as devils. We hate people for no cause and wouldn’t mind if they disappeared. Some people even wish others death for a simple offence that should be forgiven, as taught by Jesus. Others hate their parents, siblings, colleagues, schoolmates, etc. and would close their hearts to the begging of mercy.
Then, there are some children and adults alike who bully and mob others, sending others to an early grave because of their attitudes at school, work, home, etc.
There’s a need for a rethink and repentance. Dear Lord, please, give me a merciful heart. A heart that can be easily pacified. A heart of flesh that can easily be changed by your Word. Give me a heart of mercy, Oh, Lord!
