Values and Valuables

  • cabiojinia

There was this advert that was placed on the wall of the Oncology institute close to where I lived some years ago. Each morning as I went to the hospital I always saw it there immovable, for several months.

You know that one of the effects of prolonged exposure to an advertisement is that it registers in your subconscious so much that you can recite the lines offhand. So, after months of seeing it, this ad got me thinking.

It was an advert by one of the shops that trade in gold. Basically, they buy your gold or gold items in exchange for money.

The advert read “io do’ valore ai tuoi valori” in Italian. That would translate in the English language as “I value your valuables”.

That got me thinking: how will another person determine the value(worth) of my valuables? I should be the one to place whatever value I want on my items irrespective of what the world thinks. I decide if my item is worth 10 euro or 10,000 euro.

But we live in a global marketplace, where we are constantly trading. If everyone decided the value of their items arbitrarily there would be chaos. The worth of every item has to be measured against defined parameters that are locally, regionally, nationally or internationally recognised and accepted. This allows for people to sell or buy wares at the market price.

The precious metal, gold has a price it sells on the stock market per ounce or gram. And the quality of the gold (the weight) with which your material is made has to be evaluated as well. Then, of course, you have a selling price for your item.

However, what you consider as values may not be valuable to others.

Furthermore, individuals have their personal set of parameters to determine the price tag of whatever you might consider valuable – be it tangible or intangible items, including human lives, unfortunately.

The question is: how much are your valuables worth?

If I were to bid for your honesty, faithfulness, loyalty and commitment, how much would they cost?

What is the value of your love, sincerity, and indeed your life?

How much are you worth?

Let’s discuss in the comment section below.
