It is good to have long-term goals and settle your mind to focus on the results in the long term. However, one thing that will help you is to have very short-term goals that you can accomplish immediately and tick them off. Those short-term goals have to be a part of the long-term goals anyway. The good results you get from realising short-term goals will inspire you to remain consistent on your journey to the long-term goal you have.
Little accomplishments release feel-good hormones into the body that make you feel great and want to go further. If you are working on a long-term goal but there is no positive feedback, you may feel drained, uninspired, and ultimately unable to move further.
It is like starting a weight loss journey. That is a midterm goal that could take several months to achieve, depending on your initial weight and the exercise/dietary regimen you follow. However, if you are training daily, you would still expect to see results within weeks, no matter how little, else you may get discouraged. If the little things you do earn you immediate short-term results, you are inspired to go on.
A student who sets out to study for four years at the university is more inspired to continue if her short-term goals of passing her semester exams are achieved. Good grades encourage her to persist on the journey.
So, in your pursuit of long-term goals, consistency and enthusiasm are fuelled by setting and hitting short-term marks. Positive feedback sustains long-term plans.
