There are moments in every believer’s life when he has to walk THROUGH the valley of the shadow of death.
Psalm 23 opens with the beautiful things a young believer enjoys as sheep to his Shepherd. Then, it moves on to the phase of what a mature believer experiences as he walks with His Shepherd.
You need to walk THROUGH the valley but will not stay there. It is not your dwelling place, but your transition phase.
You must walk through to get to your destination. The valley is your place of training and building trust in your Shepherd. The other side is where the Shepherd is leading you.
It is a valley of the shadow of death because enemies are there who cast their shadows to make the place dark and fearful. They want you to give up and run back to the place where you are coming. They want to make you retreat instead of advance.
The good thing is that the Shepherd is with you. For though the path is unknown, unexplored by you, it is neither new nor fearful to the One who is leading you. The Shepherd is capable of leading you through it.
Also, a table has been set for you beyond this valley. That is where the Shepherd is leading you. Interestingly, that table is also why the devils in this valley of death are after your life. These demons want to stop you from reaching this table garnished with sumptuous meals. So, they fight because that is only when they have the power. Once you reach that table that is set for you, even in the presence of fearsome demons, you will enjoy, laugh, and jump. And they can do nothing about it.
So, as the psalmist exclaimed, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me,” so should you fear no evil because the rod and staff of your Shepherd comfort you. Trust in Him and keep moving. You’ll get to the other side and trust Him, there are many good things prepared for you there.
